Wire Haired Pointing Griffon

Wire haired Pointer Griffons are among the dog breeds whose origin has been well documented. With most of the work attributed to Edward Korthals of Holland. Mr. Edward Korthals developed and refined this breed by cross breeding 20 dogs from seven different breeds. More snips and snails or puppy dog tails, the Wire Haired Pointer Griffon is the result of griffon, spaniel, water spaniel, German and French pointer, and setter. Its stable breed type was stabilized and published in 1887.  The French were the first to give credence to this breed as an asset to a hunt session. The WHPG is known as a deliberate and careful hunter companion with a keen nose sense. Though lacking in speed, it is considered as "the supreme gundog".  In itself, the WHPG exhibits excellent pointer and retriever abilities making it versatile and a superb back-up.

The WHPG is a medium sized hunting dog breed. This dog breed's head is large, with yellow or brown eyes under bushy eyebrows and its muzzle is square with a bushy moustache. Its ears lie flat close to the sides of its skull. Having a liver colored nose is part of its distinction and one qualification of the AKC.

Widely attributed to its numerous ancestry lines, the Wire Haired Pointer Griffon has a double coat. Its outer coat is medium in length, slightly straight and a bit wiry. This outer coat texture is rough, mainly works as protection from rough cover during the hunt. The obligatory undercoat is fine thick down, making it possible for this dog to keep heat in and makes the coat water-resistant (to a certain degree though). The under coat is less abundant, it is lighter in color may vary in thickness depending on the climate, hormonal cycle o the dog or season.

Wire Haired Pointer Griffon coat coloring is gray (steel or dull) with brown or chestnut, roan, white and brown or white and orange markings are also acceptable. Having absolute or combination coloring of brown, white or orange are less desired (according to AKC rule book). A totally black coat is considered disqualified.

Like most sporting, hunting and working dog breeds, the Wire haired Pointe Griffon is full of energy and gets bored easily. A scheduled daily activity will keep it happy. Swimming is highly recommended for its practice aside from the fact it enjoys it a lot. If kept as both a hunt and family dog, this breed thrives as an indoor/outdoor dog.

Aside from exhibiting superb hunting attributes of its ancestry lines, this dog breed is capable of independent action aside from being directed by the hunter. As a family dog, it is loyal, loving, ready to please and one of the breeds that show a sense of humor. With strangers, human or other pets, it is friendly and playful.
